Bird ringing is an activity in which a uniquely numbered ring is attached to a bird's leg, enabling future individual identification as part of ornithological research. Basically, ringing helps keep track of the movements of a bird and, through capturing, its life-history. In addition, bird handling, as part of bird ringing, enables careful plumage examination, moult recording, ageing, and tracking of moult progress after a bird's recapture. Therefore, bird ringing is a very important method for moult research.
